A Beginner’s Guide to Cape Town’s Art Galleries

Goodman Gallery:

This women’s empowerment gallery is located on Somerset Road in Waterkant. The Goodman Gallery has played an important role in shaping contemporary South African art and has elevated some of today’s most important artists, such as world-renowned Sam Nhlengethwa and Sue Williams.

Opening hours:

  • Tuesday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa:

The largest of its kind in the world, the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa is located at the V&A Waterfront. It is also a non-profit institution that aims to collect, research and preserve contemporary art from the African diaspora.

You will discover some of the curated and thematic art from different genres such as black history, consumerism, African spirituality, sexuality, climate change and violence, to name a few.

Opening hours:

  • Tuesday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • With last entry at 5:30 p.m.

Stevenson Gallery:

With a wide range of participations in international festivals such as Art Basel Miami and Paris Photo among others. The Stevenson Gallery prides itself on being a leader in showcasing and helping artists showcase African art to the world. Steveson often hosts a series of solo and group exhibitions whose aim is to establish a two-way dialogue with South Africa and the world.

  • Thursday to Tuesday 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

WhatIftheWorld Gallery:

Founded in 2008, WhatIftheWorld is a contemporary art gallery in South Africa and internationally.

Their name anticipates the gallery’s programming, which translates into a multitude of ambitious projects that encourage curiosity and reflection.

They draw on a strong focus on Africa to represent influential artists who engage in global and local contemporary art. WhatiftheWorld features artist panels where art lovers can engage with their favorite artists behind the inspiration behind their work.

This gallery is perfect if you are looking for a dynamic gallery that focuses on urban and pop art. They are the future representative of visual communication when it comes to some of the youngest artists from South Africa and abroad.

First Thursdays

First Thursdays are the perfect platform if you want to explore more art and check out other Cape Town galleries. This happens every first Thursday of the month and allows you to experience the arts and culture of Cape Town.

It’s completely free and without a structured visit, but you browse what you like. You can start at Loop Street and end at Long Street.
